High Fiverr

High Fiverr

Do you want to make easy money? Get paid for doing what you’re good at? Pay others to do things for you? Well, there’s an app for that.

Fiverr, branded as “the marketplace for creative & professional services,” is a global outlet that allows people to buy and sell services for only $5. While it’s impossible to sum up all that Fiverr offers, just a sample of the categories include Graphics & Design, Writing & Translation, Video & Animation, Advertising, Lifestyle, as well as Fun & Bizarre. Anyone around the globe can sign up to provide their own unique service, placing it into various categories to make it easy for users to find exactly what they’re looking for. To give a more specific example of the services that are offered, I referred to what was being currently advertised on the Fiverr homepage. When someone lists a service, Fiverr encourages them to use the first person in their ad. For example:

-I will proofread and copy edit your first 1000 words
-I will create any flyer/brochure/postcard/poster
-I will test Android, iPhone application or game
-I will send a handwritten LOVE letter to your soulmate, from Paris
-I will draw a professional caricature for profile

The list goes on. Keep in mind, each of these services listed will be done for only $5 each, no matter what it is. “What do you need done? Find it on Fiverr,” their website states. And maybe what you paid for wasn’t exactly what you thought you were going to receive; the cool thing is, since it was only $5, you haven’t really lost much. Another benefit of using Fiverr is that, according to their terms of service, unless the user explicitly states in their ad otherwise, you own the copyright to anything they produce as part of the job.

Dave Hilowitz, founder and member of the band MANWOMANCHILD, took advantage of this very concept. He said: “The sheer weirdness of having all of these services advertised next to each other is inexplicably intoxicating, and the price only makes it more appealing. For me specifically, as a recording artist, it’s great for looking to hire session musicians.”

With a unique approach to use Fiverr to aid in the creation of “unrepeatable experiments in music and art,” the Philadelphia resident took to the website to reach out to other musicians under the Music & Audio category, Session Musicians subcategory. He took a track he had already recorded from his band and selected musicians to substitute specific parts of the song with their own interpretation of the drums/guitar/bass/vocals, to completely revamp the tune. In a daring experiment to strengthen his own music production, Dave concluded: “It kind of sounds like my song, but it also kind of doesn’t. Making music is like any other art project; the end result is the product of thousands of tiny creative decisions.”

In speaking with him, he referred me to an acquaintance of his, Eric Steuer, that uses Fiverr to upload his “puffy, creased, new-dad-in-the-middle-of-the-night face” photo and choose a new artist every night to turn the selfie into a work of art. Just a few examples are in the picture slideshow at the bottom. It turns out, you can really use Fiverr for just about anything.

So, perhaps you don’t need a random person to carve your name into a stirring spoon for you or a psychic reading within 24 hours doesn’t float your boat, but there are plenty things that might. Need a quick, cheap gift? Maybe an exciting new cooking recipe? How about a personal math tutor? Fiverr’s got it all. And if you do decide to use the app to either buy or sell what you’ve been looking to showcase, just make sure to also give me a high fiverr.
