Air Academy’s Prom Theme Disappoints Many Students

“Denim and Diamonds” is Making People Cringe and Feel Sad

Air Academy High School (AAHS) has an upcoming prom in just a couple of days. There has been a buzz around the school discussing this year’s prom theme and the students are angry. The prom theme for this year is “Denim and Diamonds” and students are not happy. Seniors have waited 4 years (unless they attended prom as a junior) to experience this opportunity to dress up, dance, and have fun with friends and a partner. Many students feel like this year’s theme takes the elegance and charm out of prom, resulting in a very sour taste in this year’s dance.

Not only are many seniors disappointed by this year’s prom theme, but some juniors are upset with the theme as well.

“I think that this year’s prom theme is very disappointing. I was looking forward to the glitz and glamor I associated with prom since I was a little girl watching Disney channel movies. To hear that my first prom theme is “Denim and Diamonds” was such a letdown,” junior Delaney Brandt exclaimed.

Although a majority of students are displeased with this year’s prom theme, some have taken this opportunity to look at the bright side of things and the positives of the theme.

“I think it’s pretty fitting for the place, but I don’t know about for prom though. Isn’t prom supposed to be the one where you dress up fancy and stuff? I like the fact that prom is like this though. I would rather it be for prom than have its own separate dance,” senior Christian Raker added.

Part of the issue as to why students are so upset with this year’s theme is that it was decided by a junior rather than a senior.

“I think having a junior pick the prom theme and organize the dance instead of a senior is entirely unfair and also less effective. Seniors have a better grasp of what prom is supposed to be because they have attended at least one by their senior year. A junior, on the other hand, has little to no grasp on what it should look like and should also have less say in the theme since they will have another prom to look forward to if they are unhappy with the theme for this year,” Brandt stated.

Prom is accessible to both juniors and seniors, but it’s heavily implied that prom is meant for seniors since it’s their final year.

“I don’t think it’s fair, but maybe it’s a little better if a senior picked the place,” Raker said.

Most students are upset with this year’s hokey theme, but some teachers lie in the middle of liking it or disliking it.

“My opinion is I think the whole Western aesthetic is kind of cool. But I feel like maybe it could have been more of a general aesthetic and that way it doesn’t isolate people who don’t want to dress as ‘Denim and Diamonds’. But I also feel like people are gonna dress how they want anyway, so I don’t know how big of a deal it really is,” AAHS teacher Mr. Thiele shared.

Overall, this year’s prom theme might have some fans, but a majority of students are left upset and disappointed. Prom is a day dedicated to acting sophisticated and proper and this year’s theme is encouraging bootstraps and belt buckles.

Hopefully, our Student Council will learn from their mistakes this year to make next year’s prom incredible.
