HSM 4, Mean Girls, and Princess Diaries 3
For those who still think ‘fetch’ is a thing, fear not. Or for those who still think that painting your locker pink won’t get you suspended, don’t worry. Welcome some new friends to the list of 2000’s teen classics. A generation who grew up with shows like Degrassi and Hannah Montana gets a reboot, with plans for a High School Musical 4, Princess Diaries 3, and Mean Girls: the Musical.
This past March was a big one for teenage Disney fans. Though a rumor surfaced about it in early 2010, Disney Channel’s Worldwide President and CCO Gary Marsh announced the start of production for High School Musical 4 as they begin casting for the film. The director for the similarly titled Teen Beach Movie and Teen Beach Movie 2, Jeffrey Hornaday, will be directing and choreographing the highly anticipated movie. Dan Berendsen, writer for Freeform’s Baby Daddy and Disney’s Hannah Montana: The Movie, and Peter Barsocchini, who wrote the original three High School Musical movies, will team up to write the fourth. Here’s the catch, the new movie will not feature the cast members from previous movies, instead, it will cast a whole new wildcat crew. This turn took many fans by surprise, resulting in many upset viewers. Many Kadets stated they were pretty disappointed with the lack of original cast members, especially Zac Efron, but were “willing to give it a chance.”
What about the plastic’s hitting the main stage? Tina Fey, featured in the new film Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, was stopped in an interview for the movie to talk about her 2004 film Mean Girls. In a recent interview panel at Manhattan’s Florence Gould Hall, Tina Fey, who produced this classic, admitted that a show was in the works. Fey stated, ”My husband [composer] Jeff Richmond and I, [along with lyricist] Nell Benjamin, have been working on it. Though Fey insisted the movie was ‘years away,’ she confirmed it would be on the way. Not only did Fey confirm it in the panel interview, but a few days prior she said the same to Howard Stern, a radio host. The film is without a date expected to hit the stage, it has been rumored for a Mean Girls 15th anniversary. As expected, Cady’s friend Damian will have some songs, as well as a song for ‘Fetch’ and ‘October 3rd.’
Princess Diaries, featuring Anne Hathaway, is returning with a third film, according to director Garry Marshall. He recently gave all the details to PEOPLE magazine about the next movie. “I was with Anne Hathaway a couple weeks ago, it looks like we want to do Princess Diaries 3 in Manhattan,” Marshall told PEOPLE. “Anne Hathaway is very pregnant, so we have to wait until she has the baby and then I think we’re going to do it.” As Hathaway will most likely take maternity leave when the baby is born, the hopes are for the film to get a green light soon. Chris Pine might even star in the third film as well, though this isn’t confirmed. When Marshall is reminded that Pine was open to the idea, he stated, “Yes, well Chris Pine likes me, you know why? Because his father is in Mother’s Day.”
These productions may not be here quite yet, but they are in the works. Princess Diaries will have a third movie, High School Musical will have a fourth, and Mean Girls will hit the main stage as Tina Fey works with her husband and a lyricist to create a Broadway smash.
Whitney Moran here. If I was asked to describe myself in less than 5 minutes, to say I would have a challenge would be a stretch. I am a Varsity lacrosse...
