I Am A Witness And So Are You
I Witness Bullying recently released a video for their campaign about a boy named Jack who gets bullied at school, at home, and online. When others see the torment that Jack has to put up with online, they send him encouraging messages with an emoji that looks like an eye in a speech bubble.
This emoji for the I Am A Witness is now on the newest updates of ios and android keyboards as well as downloadable keyboards. The campaign website explains why they are doing what they are doing: “More than one in four children a year experiences bullying. I Am A Witness aims to stop bullying by activating the “silent majority” of kids who witness it each day, transforming them from passive bystanders into an active collective that speak up against bullying. Now, taking a stand against it and showing support to someone in need can be as easy as a stroke of the keyboard.”
The campaigns partners include The Bully Project, GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network), Pacer’s National Bullying Prevention Center, and The Trevor Project. All of these organizations specialize in helping children and teenagers whose education, physical and emotional health, and safety are affected because of their home life and/or sexual/gender orientation.
As well as seeing this new emoji online, look around your teachers’ classrooms for a printed version of the emoji. Many teachers around Air Academy High School have placed these on their whiteboards as a sign that they are against bullying online and off.
If you see any bullying online, feel free to use the emoji to signal that you have witnessed bullying and that you are not turning away from it.
