To Silicon Valley… And BEYOND!
Google skyrockets $1.16 billion into space from the outskirts of San Francisco Bay. The company’s primary interest in purchasing NASA’s former navy hangar spiked at the prospect of the up and coming innovations that will baffle the world for the next 60-years, after which this lease will expire. Google plans to use the three massive hangars for a variety of “research and development related to space exploration, aviation, rover robotics and other emerging technologies” NASA says.
Hadleigh Malcolm from USA Today inquires, “Is this a giant step for mankind, or just cleaning out NASA’s massive garage?” Only time will tell. Google reported a spending plan for over $200 million just to fix up the place. That cost on top of the investments in the actual functioning of the hangar as a space for testing of technological thresholds could prove to be money well spent. Money stands tall as a gateway for the already world-renowned company. However, the company must not lose sight of their goal while renovating the 8-acre site.
Google plans to use part of the hangar, formerly part of Moffett Federal Airfield, as an educational facility open to the public to discover the history of technology in Silicon Valley. It will be, in essence, a gold mine for the astronomically, technologically-inquisitive tourists.
Stanford Director of the Center of Excellence for Commercial Space Transportation, Scott Hubbard, revealed that as Google strives to extend its influence to “unserved” parts of the world, its interest in small spacecraft grows increasingly.
The future of technology and space aviation is as unknown as space itself, and with this purchase and the combined efforts of a national space corporation and an internationally booming high-tech company, our world is in the forefront of groundbreaking, atmosphere shattering discoveries, that will undoubtedly test the limits of mankind for another, and surely not a final time.
