Toying with Charity
Students spread smiles this holiday season by donating toys that gave others joy. The toy drive at Air Academy was one of many opportunities possible during this time of year to brighten the lives of others by helping out and giving to those in need. With so many options in our area, there are multiple chances to make a difference either at school or around the community.
The toy drive at AAHS was run by the StuCo officers, and supported by the NHS officers this month, ending last Friday, December 12th. Many participated, donating toys in good condition or buying new ones to give to the Colorado Springs Police Department in order to give to kids in need around the community. With the mustaches of awareness and the movie night, they effectively raised money for a good cause, proving that with good planning and productive time spent, anyone can make a difference. The turnout was great, they raised 350 toys and $350 in total, which was close to their goal. This was a wonderful way to contribute to the community by cheering up kids and a perfect example of a way to spread happiness in the spirit of the holidays.
Currently, another viable option is to volunteer at a soup kitchen in Colorado Springs. Marian House Soup Kitchen, a popular location, provides meals to a variety of people: “struggling families, seniors on a fixed income, the working poor, veterans, people with disabilities, unsupported teens, and those who are homeless.” They especially appreciate any volunteer help or donations of food. If interested, it is best to contact their organization by email or phone to learn more about registering and organizing a day to volunteer.
A sure way to warm up a winter day for others is to go caroling with a group of friends or family either at a senior home, at a soup kitchen, or anywhere else in need of some festive glee. Researching senior homes in the area is quick and easy, and dates and times can be organized with supervisors effectively. Also, at other locations, supervisors should be contacted and their approval of the singing on the designated day should be sought out.
Additionally, baked goods or holiday cards can bring a smile to someone this year, at any location previously mentioned. This could include at a senior home, a hospital or hospice center, a location with people hard at work (like policemen, firemen, or animal shelter volunteers), or at any place where you see fit to express your best wishes for the holidays. Everyone appreciates small acts of kindness such as these, and feels happiness from kind words.
Finally, a letter of appreciation in general creates the same effect of happiness. Being recognized and thanked for serving a community, a country, or any other type of service shows that citizens value the efforts of the military, the mailmen, policemen, teachers, and other social servants. In addition, a letter to a child in a hospital has a comparable effect; it shows that people care, and truly wish the child to get better.
Overall, even donating once or helping out one day makes an impact in other’s lives. Finally, any type of volunteer opportunity or act of kindness helps lighten negativity, boost productivity, and spread merriment throughout this joyous month. Have a happy holiday by spreading kindness each day!
