Seasons Hit The Store to Soon

You walk into an air freshened store with holiday music blasting from the speakers ahead, but the aisles are filled with two different clashing themes: Easter and summer decorations. One after another, seasons come and go, but stores tend to shove merchandise out way too soon.

Stores already have some crazy stuff in each aisle but holiday aisle is showcased every year to show its extravagant decorations. People spend a lot of money on each season/holiday because of their traditions, which can rack in major bucks for the stores.

According to the National Retail Federation, “Holiday retail sales during 2019 grew 4.1 percent over the same period in 2018 to $730.2 billion.”

Some people don’t notice the summer decorations coming in while Easter bunnies and plastic eggs are out in the open to buy.

Sophomore Samuel Rivera said, “…[T]hey do tend to put in decorations too early, which can make [stores] seem over-decorated sometimes.”

Popular stores such as Target, Hobby Lobby and Marshall tend to do these things even more than smaller ones.

Sophomore Andrew Day said, “…[W]hen I walk into the store during holidays it is very over decorated, which kinda makes it overwhelming.”

Others think it’s a good idea because they’re just trying to get rid of product and decoration before they have to remove the items.

Maybe having too many decorations is why stores are normally criticized so hard because they continue to carry one season’s stuff until it’s all purchased so that they don’t lose profit. If they under-stock products they could lose a lot of profit.

Sophomore Reagan Huskisson said, ” [I]t makes sense that a company is just trying to get ahead of the season and sell as much as possible.”

Even after spring break which has just finished, Easter supplies are already being flown in by companies. Bunnies and banners with bold lettering saying “Easter” were already out even before the virus caused quarantines.

Many students agree that adding more decoration from another season is sometimes too much and that we should just narrow it down to one. Every holiday, this same issue arises. Stores need to stop over-stocking supplies weeks and months before the holidays start, because at this rate, we really will be stocking up holidays like Halloween and Christmas all the way back in April!
