Ah, the wonderful world of sports. Full of controversy with drugs, kneeling, and heartbreaking moments. There is so much to write about and that is exactly what I am going to do. I am going to write about sports because I couldn’t think of anything else to do. Yay!

In baseball news, the World Series happened. The Houston Astros toppled the Los Angeles Dodgers 5 to 1 in Game 7 to win the title. This is Houston’s first World Series title in franchise history and the first Texas team to win it. Even with the home-field advantage and a better record all season, the Dodgers were unable to stop Houston’s drive. Since their founding in 1962, the Astros have been chasing a World Series title. They have only been to the playoffs 11 times out of their 56 seasons. Houston made it to the World Series in 2005 but was swept 4-0 by the Chicago White Sox. The World Series title could not have come at a better time for Houston because they are still recovering from Hurricane Harvey, which devastated the city.

With the end of the 2017 MLB season, there is now more attention on the NFL. With Doug Pederson as their head coach, the Philadelphia Eagles have had an impressive season. The Eagles have won 8 games and are currently at the top of their division and have the best record in the NFL. Their only loss was to the Chiefs with a score of 27-20. While the Eagles are having a stellar season, the Denver Broncos have definitely seen better days. After the crushing defeat to the Eagles in Philadelphia that I would prefer to not talk about, the Broncos are looking for a way to escape the losing streak that has put them at a record of 3 wins and 5 losses, along with climbing out of the last place spot in the AFC West. In other news, the Cleveland Browns had a bye recently, which means they didn’t lose for once. On a more local scale, the Air Academy Kadets have finished their football season. The varsity team went 6-4 which, as Whitney Moran noted in her story, Fall Sports Overview 2017, is a 500% increase in win percentage compared to the 2015 season. They are currently ranked 92nd in the state and a much bigger number nationally.

Moving on to the world of soccer. In Europe, soccer is all over the place, so I’ll just say it is going well. In America, Toronto FC currently leads the MLS Eastern Conference with 20 wins, 9 draws, and 5 losses. Portland is currently the king of the Western Conference with 15 wins, 8 draws, and 11 losses. The Colorado Rapids are currently in 10th place in the Western Conference with 9 wins, 6 draws, and a whopping 19 losses. While the Rapids struggle, the Air Academy Kadet Soccer Team has plenty to be happy about. With an impressive record of 19 wins and no losses, they are ranked 2nd in the state and 1st in class 4A. They are hoping to take the state championship on Saturday, November 11 at 10:30 am at the Dicks Sporting Goods Park.

One overlooked area is the world of motorsports. In NASCAR, Martin Truex Jr. is currently in the lead with 4168 points. Toyota is currently leading the manufacturers’ standings with 14 wins compared to Ford’s 10 wins and Chevy’s 10 wins. In Formula 1, a race that is more than just a circle, British-born Lewis Hamilton is currently the top racer with 9 wins, 12 podiums, and 333 points. He, along with his Finnish teammate, Valtteri Bottas, have placed the Mercedes Team in 1st with 595 points. Team Ferrari, with drivers Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen, is in 2nd place with 455 points. However, with only two races left, including the famous Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Ferrari would have to win 1st and 2nd  for both races to try and come close.
