Winter Sports Preview
Winter sports are off to a great start. Keep reading to learn about boys and girls basketball, hockey, wrestling, and girls swim and dive.
Boys Basketball
Coach Clark, a Social Studies teacher here at Air Academy, coaches boys’ varsity basketball. Coach Brotherton coaches JV, and Coach Cole coaches the freshman team. Coach Clark has been coaching boys’ basketball for 8 years, but prior to coaching boys, he coached the girls team for 6 years. Coach Clark says, “[I am] looking forward to the excitement and energy that this group of young boys is going to bring this year. We have only 2 seniors who have made it all 4 years but we have a great group of boys to support them.” The first basketball game of the season is on December 1st and is away against Pueblo West. The boy’s first home game is on December 10th against The Classical Academy.
Wrestling
Coach Hill is the head coach of wrestling, and Coach Vollmar and Coach Hanenberg are assistant coaches. Both Coach Hill and Coach Hanenberg are teachers at Eagleview Middle School. Corbyn Berg, a senior wrestler, says he likes wrestling because, “I like winning matches and the support of my teammates.” Last year the wrestling team only lost two seniors, and there are a lot of returning athletes. Another wrestler, Carlos Botto, likes wrestling because, “The coaches and the people are nice, and that makes practice more fun”. Wrestling meets are starting soon, so go out and watch your fellow Kadets!
Girls Basketball
Coach Roiko, also a teacher here at Air Academy, coaches the girls’ varsity basketball team. Coach Beal coaches JV and Coach Janes coaches C-Squad. Before becoming the head coach of girls’ basketball, Coach Roiko was a girls and boys’ soccer coach. Coach Roiko is starting his 5th year as the head coach. The basketball team had the most girls tryout this year, approximately 40, but Coach Roiko said, “With as many girls we had tryout, we had to make a lot of cuts, which was the drawback.” Junior Mary Parchinski says she loves playing basketball because, “I enjoy the sport of basketball, and I love playing with my friends.” The first girls basketball game is December 2nd, at Air Academy.
Ice Hockey
Coach Andrew is the head coach for hockey. This year the hockey team had a lot of freshmen tryout. Sophomore Gavin Garrett Johnson enjoys hockey because “[he] likes that it is a contact sport and the brotherhood of the team.” This season there are a lot of seniors on the team that will strengthen the team. This year the team also has a lot of travel games. The first hockey game is Thursday December 1st against Doherty at Sertich Ice Arena.
Girls Swim and Dive
Coach Scott Newell, who is a science teacher here at Air Academy, coaches girls swim along with assistant coach and wife, Coach Sarah Newell. Coach Dylan Scott coaches girls dive. Coach Scott Newell is beginning his 16th season of coaching swim. The swim coaches are very excited about all of the new faces coming to try out swim. Coach Newell loves that “there are new kids on the team and they definitely add to the culture.” Marie Cloonan, a junior varsity swimmer, says she loves swimming because “the whole team is very friendly and positive and that makes the atmosphere great.” The first swim meet will be on Wednesday, November 30th against Lewis-Palmer at the Monument Hill Country Club.
