In this past year, there have been an unprecedented amount of sports records broken. Some records that were previously thought to be unbreakable, such as the Bulls season long wins record, have been beaten this year thanks to some truly amazing athletes, teams, and individuals.

Despite the team beginning to falter down the stretch, The Golden State Warriors got 73 wins to end up with a record of 73-9. Led by reigning MVP Steph Curry, the Warriors demolished teams on their way to a record defining season. However, what really surprised many people is the way the team did it. By shooting–and making–more threes than any other team in the entire league they started a revolution in not only the NBA, but in the game of basketball. This new style has been criticized by old players of the game such as Scottie Pippen. This revolution was highlighted by the Jetstream Journal’s own Nate Renfrew in his story here.

In golf this year, Danny Willett just recently won the Prestigious Masters golf tournament after a great run of play, and Jordan Spieth had a collapse. Jordan Spieth collapsed on the par 3 12th hole resulting in a quadruple bogey 7 on his scorecard. This was the worst score Spieth had ever received on a hole in his professional career. However, as awkward as it was for Spieth to award the Green Jacket to Danny Willett, what may have overshadowed the entire tournament was the record-breaking amount of hole in ones on the 16th hole. First, Shane Lowry hit a hole in one with an 8-iron from 181 yards away, then, Davis Love III hit one with an 8-iron from 181 yards away, then, the improbable happened. Louis Oosthuizen stepped up to hit his tee shot on the 16th hole with a ball already on the green. He struck the second ball onto the green and as it rolled towards the hole, it struck the ball that was already there which put Oosthuizen’s first ball on a path directly into the hole for an ace. The tournament had never seen so many holes in ones on a single hole. Especially not a hole in one that struck another ball on the green in order to do so.

Another unprecedented sports record that has been broken happened right here in our hometown with the Colorado Rockies. Trevor Story made his Major League Debut with the Rockies this year and has been on an absolute tear. He hit a homerun in his first four major league games, an unprecedented feat, while also powering his way to seven home runs in the team’s first six games of the season. Legends of the game are already taking notice of this young rookie as Cooperstown, the baseball Hall of Fame, has already put Story’s helmet and gloves on display. The Rockies are very excited to see how this exciting prospect turns out considering he is only 23 years old. They need all the hope they can get right now in their current playoff drought of 6 years.

This season sports fans have been blessed with witnessing some of the most incredible sports records being broken. Fans everywhere will hope to see more and more records like these broken in the coming years to add excitement and vitalize the culture surrounding all sports.
