Scene and Heard
The album, Tell Me I’m Pretty, by Cage the Elephant, came out a couple of months ago and if you don’t already know, it’s definitely a great album to listen to. Although released in December, their album includes music that will be timeless.
Similar to Melaphobia, the album demonstrates the core of their alternative rock roots, and it continues into their most recent style. The group of songs are strong and confident in the way that they are presented. It thoroughly supports the idea that the band has finally found their identity.
Cage the Elephant will surprise you with their new maturity. Even though their last albums have been comprised of songs that are well thought out, some lacked substance. However, in this album, the songs contains lyrics that are more substantial, which really helps reach listeners.
Melaphobia continues to carry out into the new album creating a humbler/rootsy style, perhaps comparable to the music of The Black Keys, perhaps because the album was produced by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach.
Tell Me I’m Pretty is seemingly a softer sounding album, giving off a relaxing vibe– it could be a great soundtrack to listen to during summer vacation. However, there are songs like “Cold Cold Cold” and “Mess Around” which switch to a more edgy sound.
They could be compared to older bands that were previously the top of the line, like The Beatles, but I believe they are bringing a new craziness to their sound, making it a soundtrack that is perfect for when our mind is searching for more. The depth of this new sound is evident with the girl that is illustrated in the song “Punchin’ Bag.” She is not the typical dream girl, or the girl next door, she is a symbol of crazy who ”carries a knife.”
If you want to catch them at a show, they are going to be part of the Ride Festival in Telluride, Colorado on July 10th. Pearl Jam is headlining. The general admission pass for the weekend is $281.20, which honestly would be worth it due to the great bands attending.
