If you are like me, then Prom dress shopping is one of the most dreaded times of the year. Shopping to find a dress that is not only cute, but fits your body the right way is a struggle for almost every girl. So what are you doing wrong? Read this article to find out what kind of dress you should look for depending on your body type.

Busty: The busty body type is when your bust is large and your hips are more narrow. Being a girl with an undefined waist, it is important to stay away from dresses that will highlight this. Look for dresses that will bring attention to your face. With broader shoulders it’s smart to stay away from strapless dresses. In fact sleeves might be your best friend. One long sleeve, loose long sleeves, or sleeveless dresses are a great way to accentuate your body type. Make sure that the hemline of your dress is not too short or it will emphasize a top heavy look throughout your body.

Apple: If you carry your weight throughout your middle then you probably have an apple body type. You have slim legs and a shorter, undefined waist. A dress with an empire waist or embellished top will help to draw attention to your upper body. Choose a dress with a full skirt which will help to camouflage your middle, or an A-symmetrical dress with a slit to show off your legs.

Petite: You might fit into the petite category if you are 5’3’’ or under. Being so short, it’s important not to wear a dress that will completely swallow your body. Floor length gowns and full skirts are a no-go for you. Wear a shorter dress, or show a little leg with a slit down the hem of your dress, this will make you seem taller. Another way to elongate your body is by wearing an a-line dress with vertical prints or pleating because this will lengthen your frame. Of course the perfect accessory to any of these choices is a tall pair of heels, just make sure you get your practice walking in them before April 9th!

Slender: The slender body type is when you have a thin frame throughout your body. The best way to accent your long and athletic physique is to wear a fitted dress. If you want to add more shape to your body then choose a dress with an empire waist, or a belt to give yourself more of a curvy figure.

Hourglass: An hourglass figure typically means that your bust and hips are proportionate to each other and your waist is slim.  If you have an hourglass figure, choose a dress with a defined waistline. Strapless or halter dresses will work perfectly with your figure.

Pear:  A pear body shape means that your hips are wider than your bust and you have a defined waist. If you are a pear shape and you want to draw attention toward the top of your body, choose a dress with a lot of detail around the neckline, such as sequins or ruffles. Wear a dress that will emphasize your waist and de-emphasize your lower half.

When shopping for your prom dress, keep in mind these helpful tips. Although it is a plus to choose a dress that goes well with your body shape, the most important thing is how you feel in the dress. As long as you feel comfortable and beautiful, there is no doubt that prom will be a memorable night for you.
