Athletes of the Month – Brooke Braden and Brennan Mays
Ever since Brooke kicked her first ball when she was four, she realized that soccer was something she was passionate about and loved it from that day on. “I realized that soccer was something I was passionate about when I realized how much I loved being out on the field and having that soccer ball at my feet, knowing that I couldn’t go a day without it.” You can tell soccer is like a baby to her because on top of being Soccer Captain and playing on our Varsity team, she also participates in Club, so she is practicing 24/7. “We lift weights every Monday and I go to the gym on my own time to stay in shape; I’m always out practicing and shooting on goal to improve.” With soccer taking up Brooke’s time, one has to wonder how she keeps her grades up. “Balancing school work and soccer isn’t that bad, I just make sure that I take any extra time that I have during school and at home to my advantage to get all my work done so I’m not stressed about it later.” With her great grades and outstanding talent, Brooke is committed to the University of Northern Colorado on a soccer scholarship and is excited to continue her soccer career and improve as a player.
As senior year comes to an end for Swim Captain Brennan Mays, he begins to prepare for a new beginning at the Colorado School of Mines, where he plans to continue swimming Division 2, but Brennan didn’t achieve this success overnight. “I started swimming when I was 5, but it was freshman year that I really started having fun with the sport and started to improve a lot.” Even though Brennan has pure talent, he trains year round with with the Colorado Springs Swim Team and is always challenging himself and competing with others to help push himself to the next level. When asked who his role model is he said, “My training partner, Andy Potts, is a good role model for me because he is an Olympic level tri-athlete and Olympic trials finalist in swimming.” Just because Brennan excels at swimming does not mean that his academics have taken a backseat. He plans ahead and gets his homework done on the weekends just like a committed student-athlete. His dedication to this sport and to his education is what makes Brennan an admirable person, and like a true Kadet, Brennan reflects leadership in and outside of the pool.
