Apps that Went to Their Graves
The legendary Flappy Bird has hit a wall, just as many other games have before it. Flappy Bird was a game controlled by the tap of your finger on the screen to navigate your bird up and down through tubes. Each tube that you go through with the bird gets you one point. If you were a little late on the bandwagon, you can get the app, it just costs the small price of $10,200 on eBay because the game has been taken off the app store. The game was highly addicting to some people, causing much stress not only on the players, but on the creator. The obsession was apparently not wanted by creator Dong Nguyen, who only took three days to make the app . As he says in an interview with Forbes, “Flappy Bird was designed to play in a few minutes when you are relaxed. But it happened to become an addictive product. I think it has become a problem. To solve that problem, it’s best to take down Flappy Bird. It’s gone forever.” iPhones and Androids now range from 100 to thousands of dollars due to the attempt of ending the ongoing obsessions, but to some that may be worth it to be part of the 50 million downloads. Although Flappy Bird was taken off the market, I’m sure the faze would have ended just as other apps have such as, Temple Run, Angry Birds, and Fruit Ninja.
The game that caused countless swipes to run away from giant monkeys, also known as Temple Run, was a huge hit for a while. Since the craze of Temple Run, there has also been a Temple Run 2 added to the mix. However, I didn’t even realize that there was a number two because it seemed that Temple Run was not as addicting as before due to an update in new and improved apps. Still, there are some people that stayed loyal to the game. If you are sick of the same old Temple Run, there are other options that are similar to Temple Run including Ninja Kid Run, Zombie Run, and other versions of the game Temple Run itself as well.
Similar to Temple Run, Angry Birds has several types of the original game ranging from Angry Birds- Seasons to Angry Birds- Star Wars II. Angry Birds was so popular that they started a merchandise line for the birds. There are flip flops, phone cases, key chains, and hats. I’m sure plenty of people are still into the Angry Bird fascination, but it started to decline in popularity within the past year or so.
At about the same time that Angry Birds came about, there was also a new game in the gaming world: Fruit Ninja. The simple glide of your finger slicing digital fruit seems like a quite easy concept, but getting a high score begins to get difficult the more it is played. There are tons of tips online suggesting ideas that may help you to master the game of fruit slicing. Whackit.com says, “Try not to be too hasty when fruit appears. Slicing every piece of fruit as soon as it comes onto the screen is not always the best option – especially in arcade mode. Instead, wait for as many fruits as possible to be lined up either horizontally or vertically before making your decisive slice.” Sadly, this game does not even make it in the top 200 free games in the app store anymore. These tips could have been useful when it was at the top of the ladder, but unfortunately it has even been overtaken by Flying Cyrus-Wrecking Ball.
Just like songs sink down into the bottom of the top hits lists, so have numerous games before. The once-famous and non-stopped games soon hit rock bottom. Even though they are abandoned, the games will be carried on to future generations because players will remember them forever. But retrospectively, the once famous games that were the coolest in our generation will be played later on, like we play Atari, Tetris, Pac-Man, and Frogger today.
