Volunteering is great for the community and also for your own self, so here are the top 5 places to volunteer this winter!

A great place to volunteer in the winter months is Memorial Hospital. They are looking for people 14 years and older, making it perfect for a high school student looking for volunteer hours. The hospital does a background check,  then you go into training, and finally, they will place you where you are needed. To volunteer at the hospital, go onto their website and fill out/submit an application.

Another interesting place to volunteer is the Teen Court. The age requirement is 16 years and up, and you will be able to question the defendant and help in deciding the sentence for the prosecuted. Teen Court is located at the Municipal Courthouse and their goal is to “use the positive power of peer influence to stop criminal behavior at its earliest stage.” Not only will you be able to participate in a courtroom, but Teen Court also looks good on college applications.

If you are up for helping the upcoming generation, there is volunteering opportunities out there for tutoring young kids. To volunteer at the Children’s Literacy Center, you must be 14 years or older. The commitment is one hour, two times a week, for three months, and when you apply you will be able to choose from 13 different places.  All you have to do is go online (see link below) and apply; you can give the gift of reading one child at a time.

It might sound cliché, but helping out in the soup kitchen is an awesome thing to do. The Marion House Soup Kitchen is open 365 days a year (yes, that includes holidays). At the kitchen you will be asked to do things such as cook, greet the people, serve the food, and much more. This is also a perfect way to give back during the holidays. The Soup Kitchen is open 10:30a.m. to 1:00p.m. Monday-Saturday, and Sundays from 8:45a.m. to 10:00a.m. If you are interested in volunteering, call (719)475-7314.

The final winter volunteering place is the YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region. To volunteer at the YMCA, you must be 15 or older and can fill out an application at http://www.ppymca.org/support/volunteer-application. The jobs range from sports and fitness work to helping with paperwork. You can use your leadership skills by leading a group of kids and you can be a positive example to young kids. This is an amazing job to have and a great way to give back to your community.
