Get hip with the newest slang words! In today’s day and age, our vocabulary is expanding every day with meaningful new words such as “yoloswag.” These new words increase in complexity and intelligence every single day, so they can be quite confusing and hard to keep up with. One of the more recent words, “twerk,” was made famous by the singer Miley Cyrus. Although “twerking” should not be done by many people, including Miley Cyrus, it is still growing roots into the English language, as it was just made an official word by the Oxford dictionary.

Like it or not, young adults and teens are using these new types of words more and more often. While some actually make sense, other vernaculars sadly do not make any sense whatsoever. One of these “words” that does not make sense is “3hunna”. While nobody knows its true meaning, it is often shouted as an adjective similar to the word “awesome.” Another one of these words that has no official meaning is the phrase, “Turn Up.” Often yelled at parties and other special occasions, the phrase “Turn Up” was made popular by rappers and highschoolers and it spread across the country like a wildfire. Not all of these words, however, do not have a meaning; one of these words is the term “selfie.” The word selfie refers to when someone has taken a picture of him or herself, often in a pose such as the “duck face.” The term “selfie” was just recently announced the word of the year by the Oxford dictionary, as more and more people are using the word in their everyday language and social medias. So, the term “selfie” looks like it is here to stay for quite a long time.

This is a rare occasion, for these slang words usually have a lifespan similar to that of the common housefly. Most of these slang words that are no longer in circulation have tried to make a comeback, but are just too stupid to ever be said seriously ever again. “Raise the roof” was a common phrase in the early 2000’s, but died quickly and is now only used by parents who think that it is “hip” and “cool” to say. But parents need to stop saying these words, as they are merely embarrassing themselves and their child in unimaginable ways.

Slang is not just confined to speaking nowadays; often slang words are accompanied with actions. One example of this is the Terio dance. To perform the complicated Terio dance, you must scoop to the floor with your right hand while saying the phrase, “Ooh Kill ‘Em.” Once this has been done, you are free to yell common phrases such as “Turn Up” or “3hunna.” The Terio dance can be followed with several other complicated maneuvers that I am going to let you explore and learn on your own.

Slang has also taken hold in the clothes that we wear every day. The term “Versace” is often said when one feels sharp and that he or she looks “swaggy.” This new word was also made popular by various rappers and has made every highschooler think that they have loads of “yoloswag.”

Like it or not, new slang words are created every single day and are constantly evolving to have more and more complex meanings and synonyms. So, go off, be free with your vocabulary, unless you are over the age of 40, then it is just weird for you to say these modern, intricate new words.
