Air Academy’s Winter Athletics
The winter sports are one of the best seasons for Air Academy Athletics! It’s the perfect way to keep active and release endorphins to get rid of the winter blues or meet some new friends! Either way, winter can feel like a slow season. As it’s wrapping up for the year, here’s a summary of our teams and highlights.
Girls swimming is the perfect taste of summer in the cold temperatures. The Rampart pool welcomes our team and others this season. Coaches Scott and Sarah Newell lead this Lady Kadet team. Diving is also an amazing aquatic athletic sport. Our girls are at a record of 1-3 wins to losses this season in dual meets. Relay and Invitational meets have us taking 3rd twice and 2nd. If you want to see how the sport works or support the team, the next meet is on Saturday, February 4th at Cheyenne Mountain High School. The schools competing in the swim meet include Air Academy, Cheyenne Mountain, Discovery Canyon, Falcon, Lewis-Palmer, Palmer Ridge, Sand Creek, Vista Ridge, and Cheyenne Mountain.
Girls basketball is coached by AAHS teacher Mr. Roiko, Craig Beal, and Matt Janes. The girls record is 8-0! It’s one of the most popular sports to cheer at and get spirited about in high school. Come join in on the spirit and support the basketball players! The next girls game is today, February 1, at Air Academy vs. Sand Creek at 7:00 PM.
The boys basketball team plays Sand Creek at 7:00 PM at Sand Creek today as well. The coaches, Barry Clark, Sean Brotherton, and James Cole are working hard to build up the program for the future years and players. The JV team has a 7-1 win loss record!
Wrestling is the next sport up, another individual sport. Coached by Nate Hill, Brad Vollmar, and Peter Hannenberg, the team is just about half way through their season, too early to have statistics.
Lastly, hockey is coached by Andrew Marshall. The team practices at the world arena. This is arguably just as popular and spirited as football and basketball, even with a record of 2-10. The World Arena is hosting a game on Saturday, Februrary 4th, at 6:30; make sure to come out and support your Kadet hockey players at the World Arena!
All of the sports here at Air Academy this winter are sure to rid you of your winter blues, so try them next year and be sure to await our spring sport article. Visit the Air Academy athletic website http://www.pikespeakathleticconference.org/g5-bin/client.cgi for more upcoming meets and events!
