Disney’s Newest Addition
Disney is adding a new princess! On November 23, 2016, from the directors who brought you The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and The Princess & the Frog, comes Disney’s Moana . The movie Moana is about an adventurous Hawaiian teenager that must travel through the dark seas. She embarks on a journey that will save her people and her island, but this fearless teenager can’t do it on her own. On her journey, she must find the demigod Maui, who will help her become a master wayfinder. Moana means “ocean” in Hawaiian. This fits the title of the movie because the main character, Moana, has had a connection with the sea ever since she was a little girl, “The ocean is a friend of mine,” she says.
In the process of directing the movie, John Musker and Ron Clements, searched for the perfect voice to fit the part of Moana. After auditioning hundreds of girls throughout the pacific islands they came across Auli‘i Carvalho, who was later cast as the voice of Maona. Maui, the demigod, is played by Dwayne Johnson. The movie setting is based in Hawaii, resulting in a beautiful and realistic animation.
Some characters from the upcoming movie include Chief Tui, Moana’s father, played by Temuera Morrison. Sina, Moana’s mother, is played by Nicole Scherzinger; and Rachel House plays Gramma Tala, an old woman who is close with Moana and who also loves the ocean. Tomato, a 50-foot crab, is played by Jemaine Clement. Hei Hei, Moana’s pet rooster, is played by Alan Tudyk. According to the director Ron Clements, Hei Hei is “the dumbest character in the history of Disney animation.” These are only some of the unforgettable characters that we will meet in Moana.
Disney is unfolding the idea of diversity, first with Princess & the Frog and now with Moana. These two princesses, Tiana and Moana, are both unique to Disney because of their culture. Tiana is African-American and Moana is Hawaiian, therefore these princesses connect more people together, showing children know that all races are beautiful.
Don’t forget to check Moana out in theaters on November 23, 2016. This movie will be an absolute thrill to watch with all the action packed scenes and glorifying moments, it’s a movie you won’t want to miss! For more information, visit http://movies.disney.com/moana.
