5 Memorable Olympic Moments
The 2016 Rio Olympics hosted great athletic performances, but the best moments happened outside of the competition. From Michael Phelps’ death glare to Ally Raisman’s intense parents, there was never a dull moment. Team USA wasn’t the only team to put on spectacular performances and crazy conjunctures.
Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympian in the world with an impressing 23 Olympic gold medals. However, the moment that triumphed all his records and medals was his pre-race game face. Before the 200 meter butterfly semifinals, Phelps’ eyes were glued to one other swimmer, South Africa’s Chad Le Clos. Phelps sat on the sidelines with his hood up and burned holes in the head of Le Clos. Someone snapped a picture, and the announcers and internet loved it. When asked about it, Phelps said to The Huffington Post, “I was not intentionally mean mugging him or giving him a dirty look.”
Gymnastics is an extremely stressful time for the athletes because of all the things that could go wrong. While the gymnast women get nervous, their parents turn into basket-cases. This was especially the case with American Gymnast Ally Raisman’s parents. While competing on the uneven bars, the camera zoomed in on Mr. and Mrs. Raisman who were squirming in their seats, covering their eyes, and yelling, “Stick it!” After a successful routine and landing, her parents immediately turned to abrupt cheering. For the rest of the gymnastics competition, a camera was always pointed at the Raismans.
The marathon is arguably one of the most grueling events in the Olympics, so it’s amazing when runners find humor and fun during the 26.2 mile race. German twins, Anna and Lisa Haner, crossed the finish line in Rio smiling and holding hands. The twins came 81st and 82nd in Sunday’s women’s marathon. However, many criticize their finish, asking if it was betrayal or celebration of sporting ideals. Nevertheless, the sisterly moment they shared together “was the highlight of our careers,” said the twins. Rain fell on the men’s marathon course, making the roadway a bit slick. American Meb Keflezighi, who finished in 33rd place with a time of 2:16.46, fell when he got to the finish line. However, his humor was still intact as he started doing push ups before getting up and finishing his race.
Rio outdid itself with an incredible open ceremony. As the athletes paraded in, one particular athlete caught the attention of the announcers and viewers alike. Tonga’s flag bearer, Taufatofua, 32, was competing in Taekwondo and is the first Tongan athlete to qualify for the sport. His unique outfit, a piece of cloth wrapped around his waist, and his ripped, oiled-up body stole the hearts of the world.
Hopefully the 2018 Winter Olympics will garner as many stories as the Rio Olympics did.
