Music Revival
Not just a big month for food and holiday festivities, this past November was also a huge month for the music industry. Weezer, Ellie Goulding, Sara Bareilles, Tim McGraw, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, Logic, and One Direction are just some of the few highly anticipated releases last month. Here is an overview of November’s hottest tunes.
Weezer started out strongly with their single “Do You Wanna Get High?” A sound similar to the band’s Pinkerton days, the single was more of a pure sound with a powerful guitar chord-progression. With some over-driven riffs, and a catchy chorus of “Oohs,” this song brings you back to the band’s glory days in the ’90s.
Ellie Goulding hit hard with her third studio album Delirium, featuring hot songs like “On My Mind” and “Something in the Way You Move.” “On My Mind,” similar sounding to the British singer’s “Lights” and “Burn,” has a strong electronic beat and a rhythm perfect for pop radio. “Something In the Way You Move” has a softer electronic bass, but is still a good girl’s-night-out dancing song.
Sara Bareilles broke into the music scene with “Love Song” in 2007, but she has spent the last few years writing the music and lyrics to the musical “Waitress.” Her album “What’s Inside: Songs From Waitress” includes all the songs from the production. A single from the album, “She Used To Be Mine,” is a ballad that takes a slower rhythm than the artist’s past songs on the charts.
Tim McGraw’s album “Damn Country Music” is #6 on the country charts, featuring the single “Top of the World.” This album reintroduces the artist’s love for classic guitar heartbreak ballads; but McGraw has thrown in some contemporary tunes like “Love Runs.” The album also features a controversial song “Don’t Make Me Feel at Home,” that may offend many people when they think about it’s contrast to artist’s real morals.
Selena Gomez dropped her album, “Revival,” celebrating her musical rebirth as a confident pop star. With her hit single, “Good For You,” Gomez redefines her image by providing a look into her adult life and adding some sexy deep rhythm and pop vocals to the song. Another single, “Hands To Myself,” has a flirtatious vibe and a beach-pop sound. Her new confident sound is similar to Charlie XCX and would be perfect for any pop-dance fan.
Justin Bieber topped charts once again, with his highly anticipated 13th album, “Purpose.” With a more mature sound, and some deep electro bass, Bieber’s album is number one on the iTunes. Top singles from the album include “Sorry,” “What Do You Mean?” and “I’ll Show You.” Bieber’s new album could be perceived as similar to The Weeknd’s newest album.
Logic dropped his new album “The Incredible True Story” on the 13th of November, the same day as Justin Bieber and One Direction. With his first mixtape since 2011, the rapper’s sophomore album is currently being enjoyed by fans of Drake, G Eazy, and J.Cole. The album mixes deep-house beats with a ’90s vibe on the undertone.
One Direction’s fifth album hit the charts with a bang, leaving the band’s large fan-base in a mix of emotions. “Made in the A.M.” features a sad ‘goodbye for now’ vibe as the group announces their temporary break. “Hey Angel,” “Wolves,” and “Temporary Fix” all throw in a bumping ’70s vibe with fun guitar riffs and intros with kicks.
Some singles that dropped last month and topped the charts within days include Adele’s’ “Hello,” and Alessia Cara’s “Here.” Both were played countless times throughout the month of November. Adele’s single was released with no promotion and has stayed on the iTunes Top 10 for weeks. Alessia Cara’s single was a good introduction to the artist’s first album and her piano pop hits.
November proved to be a strong month for new music; music lovers everywhere are already experiencing and enjoying the new chart toppers of last month.
Whitney Moran here. If I was asked to describe myself in less than 5 minutes, to say I would have a challenge would be a stretch. I am a Varsity lacrosse...
