Sophomore Lydia Moore looking over her National Honor Society Application!

The National Honor Society (NHS) is an organization where high school students who are sophomores and juniors can apply to join an organization to help better themselves with the chance of getting into college. NHS is having applications in the yearly course in Schoology. Applications are still open from now to April 19, 2022, and are due at 3:00 pm. NHS is a great way for students to help open up to the community and help provide support for themselves and others.

“ I’ve heard about the national honor society from my older sister. Who actually got accepted into it and is now getting a lot of scholarships from colleges,” sophomore Bethany Michalak stated.

Not only does NHS help students prepare for college. But it also pushes students to then better themselves academically and to see how far they can get in school in terms of their grades. NHS is based on the 4 pillars of leadership, service, character, and scholarship.

“ I heard about the opportunities about the NHS program from upperclassmen. Not only am I excited to apply next year for the opportunity. But now that I have heard about it now I can better prepare for the application process,” freshman Kennedy Evers noted.

NHS, however, does not affect your college admissions. However, it can help you out with academic scholarships. Typically merit-based scholarships are based on your grades and your inclement in high school. NHS could show that you took challenging classes and it could also help with scholarships for college.

“ I know NHS is a great way to show my skills for college, but I just don’t really know at the moment if I want to apply to college just yet,” sophomore Jake Wike exclaimed.

Even if students are unsure about if they want to apply to the organization, all students still have the opportunity to join. Many students are given the chance to join. However, students must have a GPA of 3.75 or above weighted or unweighted. Many students apply each year to this program and a hand select few will be chosen to join the program.

” I applied last year to the society and got in. Luckily now I am getting a lot more scholarships from local colleges. I am glad and grateful for being accepted into the National Honor Society. Especially since I was worried I wasn’t qualified enough for the program,” junior Emma Martin mentioned.

The acceptance rate should be tied to a percentage instead, like the top 20-25%. In comparison to other schools, 92 students is a small number and can make NHS seem exclusive. When applying for the opportunity to join the organization, students will have to pull up all their information from past years showing how they contributed to the community.

NHS students take the time to be active members of the organization. The NHS is a great place to build a robust college profile and it provides an excellent outlet for developing important skills like leadership and providing service to the community. NHS is a great way for students to help show how the students themselves have worked hard to get where they are. It also shows how students help contribute to their community within the realms of leadership, service, and character.
