Summer Sports vs Winter Sports: Which one is better?
From snowboarding to surfing and diving in the ocean, have you ever wondered which may be the better or more exciting of the lot: summer or winter sports?
People have been visiting both ski resorts (host to several winter activities) and beach resorts, (where much of the summer activities take place) for decades now. Both categories hold exciting and extreme sports that may cause someone’s adrenaline to skyrocket and let them have loads of fun.
However, when it comes down to it, are summer sports preferred over the sports available in the winter? Or vice versa?
“Soccer – I have good friends in it and it’s very rewarding when I do well,” Air Academy junior Eddie Harley remarked when asked about his favorite sport in general.
Team sports have become a popular activity as well, including football, basketball, baseball, and several others.
“My favorite sport is tennis. I have been playing for over 10 years now and, after having played many other sports, it’s one I keep coming back to,” junior Lily Garrisonn from Air Academy responded.
Tennis is a much more individual sport compared to larger team sports such as soccer. Coincidentally, both of these sports fall under the Summer category. However, that does not imply they cannot be participated in during the winter.
Many sports such as Track and Field, are offered indoors during the snowy seasons for students and people to participate in.
“I prefer summer sports over winter sports for three reasons: I love playing outside, I love getting tanned, and I like how there’s more versatility in summer sports (like winter sports seem very dependent on there being snow or ice). I also am very partial to the summer season so that plays a big role in my decision,” Garrisonn added.
Garrisonn spoke about the “versatility” in summer sports as opposed to winter sports. This very well may be true, however, one cannot go snowboarding on a slope with no snow. Notwithstanding, fishing in a river or a lake, can be done during the summer or the winter. The activity known as ice fishing revolves around fishermen fishing for fish through a hole in the ice over a lake.
“I think summer sports are better because they are canceled less due to better weather,” said Harley in agreement with Garrisonn.
In Colorado especially, the winter weather often seems to get in the way of many sports. That does not mean though, that summer has perfect weather. Heavy rains may intervene in the way of a baseball game during the summer just as much as a snowfall would have a tennis match canceled.
Harley ponders about his favorite things that come to mind when he thinks of the differences between summer and winter sports.
“My favorite thing about summer sports is being outside in the sun and fresh air and my favorite thing about winter sports are coming home to a warm bed afterward,” Harley concluded.
“My favorite thing about participating in summer sports is spending the time outside with the heat and sun. In the winter I really like skiing, so my favorite part about winter sports would be the atmosphere. There is just something about the snow and the mountain that makes you feel free,” Garrisonn finished her thoughts.
Whether it’s the high rush of adrenaline from snowboarding down a steep mountain or scuba diving among giant manta rays and grey reef sharks, both summer and winter sports have their pros and cons.
Which one reigns supreme? Well, that answer comes down to you.
