At Air Academy High School there are several activities, sports and clubs available for students to become involved in. One of these clubs is National Honor Society, which is set up for upperclassmen and run by Renee Motter.

NHS is a club for students who achieve highly in academics, leadership and character. To be eligible to join, students must maintain a 3.5 GPA throughout the year. This club is meant for students who want to achieve excellence in their homes, school and community.

The main goal of NHS is to promote four basic tenets: scholarship, service, leadership and character. Practicing these qualities will help improve your overall disposition. Serving your school and community forces you to put people before yourself, which can be very humbling.

“I joined NHS because you get to serve your community, which allows you to step out of your comfort zone and help others,” junior Campbell Fair stated.

Being a part of NHS isn’t just about good grades. This club builds character and leadership at school and in your community by using your own time to care for others.

“To be a member of NHS students must attend the monthly meetings, complete 30 hours of community service, maintain a 3.5 GPA, and remain upstanding citizens of AAHS,” Motter said.

Students will receive an invitation letter from NHS inviting them to join the club and letting them know that their hard work has been recognized. The next step is an application students fill out to become part of the club. This application has you list your involvement at school and your community. You need to list how you have served your community and what service you plan on doing. Also, there is a section where you need to find teachers who know you well to give you a recommendation. This application gives you a first impression of identity and allows you to demonstrate why you would be a good fit for NHS.

“I was apart of National Juniors Honors Society for my middle school years and loved it. I am really looking forward to joining the NHS next year because it encourages me to keep my grades up,” stated sophomore Jack Pearne.

NHS has many activities for students to attend that can assist them in gaining their community service hours. For example, coming up at 7 p.m. Monday, October 29 in the cafeteria there is a trivia night to raise money for charity. This is a great way to serve your community – it gives to the people who need it the most.

If you are new to NHS you will eventually have to attend the induction ceremony, which introduces new students to the club and acknowledges their character. In the spring of 2019 sophomores will get that opportunity and recognition.

Overall, NHS is a great opportunity for students to step out of their comfort zone and serve others. Also, it is a way to be acknowledged and celebrated for outstanding grades, character, service and leadership qualities.
