April: a month filled with transitions and newcomings. It introduces a season devoted to growing and changing and allows for much deserved recognition of poetry.

National Poetry Month was introduced in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets, a group of poets, publishers, librarians, literary organizations, booksellers, and teachers.

A month dedicated to poetry honors an art which has been used to communicate and evoke emotion for years. Its many forms highlight each writer’s personality and experiences. Without poetry, language would lack the many works of Robert Frost, Maya Angelou, Edgar Allan Poe, and various other poets who captured audiences of all ages. If these artists we’re not recognized each year, literature would lose poetic perfection.

Enjoy a work inspired by the many poets honored in National Poetry Month.

Transitions

Life begins as a child cries
Breathing in, breathing out
In a mother’s arms, it lies

From this point on, change ensures
Moving on, bidding farewell
Endless transitions, this is sure

Old things leave, new arrive
Without this, one cannot grow
Memories always survive

Change is needed
It keeps you young
It should be happily treated

No fear in new
With love, bid old
These things are true

So bring on the change
Sadness, there’s none
Although sometimes strange
It makes life more fun
