Mackie Tate Tygart jamming to some summer tunes

The clocks have changed and the days are getting longer, which can mean only one thing: Summer is almost here! But how can you fully enjoy the warm weather and free time that comes with summertime if you don’t have a playlist of tunes to blast with the top down in your convertible or your head hanging out of the school bus window? Here’s a list of some hip summer tunes to help establish your summertime vibe.

  1. Call Me Maybe (Carly Rae Jepsen)- Remember 2012? The world had sighed a breath of relief that summer after narrowly escaping the Mayan prophesy of death, and no song more clearly captures the pure freedom and relief than the repetitive ear worm that is Call Me Maybe. This song brings back sweet memories of your mom driving back you and your friends from the mall with a summer breeze blowing through your hair while you were screaming the lyrics.
  2. That’s What I Like (Bruno Mars)-  Do you have a condo in Manhattan? Do you wish you did? Mars truly captures the carefree feelings of summer and the idea that anything goes in summer. “It gets me pumped and energized” said Aryana Hasanabadi, Air Academy freshman. Whether you are chilling with your friends or your boo thing, That’s What I Like is a song that’s fit for any summertime hangout.
  3. Havana (Camilla Cabello)- As soon as summer starts it seems people are flying out to exotic locales. Don’t have the budget to swing a week-long vacation in Cabo? Listening to Havana is practically the same thing as the sultry sound is reminiscent of a muggy tropical location and the simple melody will have you humming along thinking about the beautiful country you left half of your heart in.
  4. Lowlife (Poppy)- By the end of the school year, many students are feeling like a lowlife, but with this despondent title, Poppy surprises with a chill reggae beat and infectious melody. Poppy the artist is most known for her odd YouTube videos and Illuminati references. Lowlife is a surprisingly infectious song that perfectly captures the juxtaposition of feeling terrible on a great sunny day.
  5. New Rules (Dua Lipa)- Boys stay playing games is the integral message of this pop anthem. If you’re looking for a song to scream with your friends, this is the one. With an upbeat sound and dynamic vocals, New Rules fits the classic summer hit formula.
  6. Feel It Still (Portugal, The Man)- For a song, you can’t help but sing along to check out Feel It Still. “It makes me feel energetic, like I can dance” said Azia Taylor, an Air Academy senior. Feel It Still has topped the charts and even won a Grammy, proof of its head-bobbing hipness.
  7. Footloose (Kenny Logins)-  Feeling footloose and fancy-free? From the iconic film of one town’s rebellion against draconian no dancing rules to your summer adventures, Footloose is a song full of good vibes. “I feel happy and wanna ya know (snaps)” said Abby Sekutera, Air Academy senior. Footloose is a song that encapsulates the desire to break free for summer.

If you’re not quite ready for summer, hopefully this playlist will get you hype for blue skies and summertime.
