NO TO DRUGS

No Drugs. Google Labeled for Reuse.

Always say no to drugs, no matter how cool they may appear. Simply put, drugs can ruin lives. On February 13, 2017, a sad story unfolded when a mistake turned into a disaster for Christopher Wheeler, a freshman student attending Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. Christopher Wheeler was a pledge for Phi Kappa Psi, a fraternity, who was possibly hazed and drugged according to Wheeler’s attorney. Wheeler says he took “laced marijuana or LSD” at the frat house as a hazing activity. This resulted in Wheeler, under some drug influence, leaving the house in search for a certain girl in a certain dorm room around 1 AM. He then knocked down the door of a girl named Theresa and stabbed her in the neck with a boy scouts pocket knife. Thankfully, Theresa was transported to the hospital and returned home the same day. Recovered from the injuries, she is doing fine now.

A good kid made a bad mistake and it cost him his future. Christopher Wheeler says, “It was a big shock when I heard what I did, I was disgusted with myself, I just want to apologize to Theresa and the university for any problems I caused them or if I brought shame to them or anything like that.” Many fellow students, family, and friends came to Wheeler’s side in saying he had always been a very sweet boy and very kind and the drugs took him over that night; it wasn’t the actions of Christopher himself. Brittany Harner says, “He was the sweetest kid. Even if you didn’t know him and you didn’t know him personally, you knew that he was a good person.” Drugs can take total control over you and a prime example is in this Creighton case. This boy was a good kid but the drugs controlled him for that night and it all resulted in unnecessary violence. Wheeler is now charged with second degree assault and use of a weapon to commit a felony. Christopher Wheeler’s life was completely changed in one night due to a popular activity among college kids; never do drugs because they can and will ruin your lives and others with it.

However, Wheeler is very apologetic. “I have never felt this bad about doing something. I feel like I have destroyed who I am, I am usually a good guy and I can’t believe I did this. I can’t apologize enough to what I did to her and I am sure she is okay but that doesn’t change how bad I feel about everything that happened.” Say no to drugs, always!

In response, several Air Academy students were questioned about how the story made them feel about Greek life and fraternities.

Aubrie Romes (AAHS student) –  “I mean I don’t know, there [are] pros and cons to everything. There are going to be bad things everywhere. I don’t think fraternities themselves shouldn’t be responsible for this, but it should be looked at as a problem by itself, like an individual problem and not looked at as a frat problem.”

Marshall Casebear (AAHS student) –  “I was just at Creighton this weekend, and I loved it. But to answer your question, I have never really been a fan of greek life to begin with but it surely doesn’t help.”

Then, the students were also asked if they have ever considered going to Creighton and whether or not this story  affected their opinion.

Aubrie Romes (AAHS student) – “I was never looking at Creighton, so no.”

Marshall Casebear (AAHS student) – “ I mean I love the school and bad things happen everywhere; so, no, it doesn’t affect my decision too much, but we will have to see.”
