Former President George H. W. Bush was recently hospitalized after suffering from an acute respiratory problem. It is said that his problem stemmed from pneumonia. The 41st President is currently 92 years old has already had existing health concerns: the same concerns that have made him decide not to attend President Trump’s inauguration. About seven years ago, Bush was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and he can no longer walk, he requires an electric scooter to get around. In addition to these issues, Bush also experienced other health scares in 2014 and 2015.

His problems started as he was hospitalized on Saturday, January 14. He was responding well to the drugs he was given; however, on Wednesday, January 18, Bush was admitted to the intensive care unit at Houston Methodist Hospital after his condition worsened. Doctors said that he underwent a procedure that required sedation. The procedure aimed to protect and clear his airway, and as of Wednesday evening, he was no longer sedated. Jim McGrath, the Bush Family spokesman, stated that Bush is alert and in stable condition in the ICU. He was also being evaluated for his health to see if his breathing tube could be removed. As of now, Bush is going to be kept in ICU for “observation while he is still intubated.” The procedure has concerned many doctors around the nation as intubation and sedation indicating that the patient, in this case, Bush, is having troubles breathing on their own.

Coincidentally, Barbara Bush, George H.W. Bush’s wife and former first lady, was also hospitalized on Wednesday morning after experiencing extreme fatigue and coughing. The first lady, currently 91 years old, was hospitalized as a precaution, and was diagnosed with bronchitis. However, she has been treated with antibiotics and is making a recovery.

As the couple has spent the past days in the hospital, they have been greeted with overwhelming support. All of the former presidents have wished them well. On Wednesday before the inauguration, President Obama said in a press conference, “They have not only dedicated their lives to this country, they have been a constant source of friendship and support and good counsel.” He added by saying “they are as fine a couple as we know,” and stating that the are “really good people.” Bill Clinton took to twitter to show his support to his predecessor stating, “41 and Barbara-thinking about you both and sending wishes for a speedy recovery. Love, 42.”

Even though Bush was unable to attend President Trump’s inauguration, he wrote a letter to Trump apologizing for being unable to make it and wishing him luck in leading America for the next four years. Trump also went on Twitter to express his concern: “Looking forward to a speedy recovery for George and Barbara Bush, both hospitalized. Thank you for your wonderful letter!” While George H.W. Bush was unable to attend the inauguration, his son, George W. Bush went.

Despite growing health concerns for the aging president, he has still been very active. To celebrate his 90th birthday, he made a tandem parachute jump. In 2016, shortly after his 92nd birthday, he led a group of 40 wounded warriors on a fishing trip with his speedboat.
