Terrorist attacks have become increasingly abundant in the past few years, beginning with Al qaeda and now with the rise of ISIS. ISIS has been behind several recent and horrible attacks on countries around the globe.

Just as we began to welcome in the New Year, at least one gunman forced his way into a nightclub in Turkey, before opening fire on those who had gathered there to celebrate on what should have been an amazing night. However, it turned deadly. The German gunman killed 39 people and injured nearly 70 people before fleeing the scene.

On Wednesday, the Turkish authorities released that they had identified the gunman who had went on the deadly rampage at the Istanbul nightclub on New Year’s Day, they have refused to release his name to the public. The gunman in question is believed to be about 25 years old and from a Central Asian nation such as Uzbekistan or Kyrgyzstan.

This recent attack in Turkey has only been one of the many with several others taking place in France and other European countries. ISIS has already claimed most of these attacks, as they said a “soldier of the caliphate” had carried out the mass shooting to avenge Turkish military operations against the terror group in northern Syria.

This holiday season seemed especially bleak this year, as another act of terrorism was performed by the same organization in Berlin over the 19th through the 23rd of December. It is believed that one or more men plowed a tractor-trailer truck into a crowd at a Berlin Christmas market, killing 12 and injuring 48.

ISIS claimed that they inspired this absurd attack, as “a soldier of the Islamic State” carried the attack out. One of the countries and cities that has been attacked several times by ISIS, is Paris, France. Paris has been the site of several of the worst bombings and shootings carried out by ISIS.

The deadliest of them coming on November 13, 2015, in Paris. A series of shootings and explosions left at least 129 people dead and hundreds more injured in the deadliest violence France had seen in decades. The attacks included a shootout in a Paris restaurant, multiple explosions near the Stade de France, and a hostage situation at Paris’ Bataclan concert hall. This attack was one of the many to bring ISIS into the public eye, which made quite a demonstration of animosity towards the rest of humanity.

In early March of 2016, a series of explosions rocked the Belgian capital of Brussels, killing at least 31 people and wounding more than 200. ISIS orchestrated these horrific bombings after Belgian officials finally captured Salah Abdeslam, the last remaining Paris attacker at large.

France has not been the only country to be targeted by the group. In Tunisia, on March 18th, 2015, the assailants were recorded wearing military uniform allowing them to walk right by the security guarding the National Bardo museum. This is where they waited for a tourist bus to return before opening fire, they then went into the building executing 8 more of the unsuspecting tourists.

The attack left at least 19 people dead before they killed themselves during a police stand-off. Yet again, ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack. ISIS has also targeted military and police bases, similar to the January 29, 2015 attack, jihadists linked to the Sinai Province of the Islamic State targeted security forces in Egypt with a series of coordinated bombings and rockets aimed at a police headquarters, a military base and a residential complex for security forces. Nearly 50 people were killed in the attacks, including 14 civilians, six police officers and 24 soldiers.

The attacks have continued to be unrelenting as we have entered into our new year. Several new attacks have caused this new year to fall into a slump already, and with more deaths things have began to look bleak. More attacks will undoubtedly take place in this upcoming year however we hope that with new security measures, they will decrease in intensity and numbers.
