More torque than a Ferrari! Chevrolet has brought an upgraded turbocharged beast to the table, the 6.6L Duramax L5P V8 Turbo Diesel. The new engine can be found in 2017 models of the Silverado 2500 and 3500 heavy duty (HD) trucks.

In recent years, Chevrolet has been struggling to keep up with the competition in torque and horsepower (hp). Ford with its brand new 6.7L Powerstroke V8 pumping out a whopping 925lb/ft torque and 435hp withholding the highest towing ratings of 32,500 pounds. Close behind is Ram with its inline six-cylinder 6.7L Cummins Diesel engine pounding out a solid 900lb/ft of torque and 385hp with a tow rating of 31,210lbs. Lagging behind was Chevy with its 2016 6.6L Duramax LML V8 with a meager 397hp and 765lb/ft torque with a towing rating of 23,200lbs. So what is expected out of the new engine?

Well, as released by General Motors (GM), the new truck is capable of an astounding 445hp and 910lb/ft of torque. Nearly 50hp and 145lb/ft of torque more than its previous version. Although the Ford has a higher-rated torque by 15lb/ft and the Silverado has 5 more horses, the engine’s full capabilities haven’t been released. This means the engine could possibly tow more or less than 32,500lbs. Tests such as towing 20,000lb trailers then driving up a 7% grade highway at an altitude of 11,000 feet (hence going through Eisenhower Tunnel on I-70, 11,500ft). Max towing capabilities aren’t worth bragging about if the truck can’t handle the toughest conditions. Once the 2017 heavy duty models hit the car lots, we will know for sure what the statistics are on this.

Now, what is new with the overall engine? For starters, max torque can now be reached at a lower amount of revolutions per minute (RPM), 1,550 to 2,850 to be exact. As stated by GMAuthority.com, “The new Duramax 6.6L represents a next-generation redesign that features an all-new, stronger cylinder block and rotating assembly, as well as a new GM developed control system.” As a turbo diesel, the turbocharger was improved to allow the engine to produce more power with less exhaust emission making the engine cleaner than before. With the improved cylinder block comes new cylinder heads made of a stronger material and design instead of the prior design with aluminum heads. This will add both reliability and durability to the engine.

What is new with the 2017 Silverado HD? Aside from an improved powertrain, there is a brand new air intake system. A hood scoop has also been added, allowing for fresh air to be introduced into the engine. This will help cool it and allow it to breathe better. As stated by Chevy, “The all-new air intake system provides air to the engine that is very close to the outside air’s temperature, this helps maintain performance while under stress.” As for exterior and interior looks the Silverado HD, it keeps it’s beloved 2015 design aside from a wind scoop on the front hood. Along with this, all of the die hard Chevy fans will be pleased to know that there will be no facelifts on the 2017 HD, leaving the double row lights we all love (the 2016 Silverado 1500 had a facelift ridding it of its double row lights that are infamous for the exterior look).
